Tired of Traffic? Think Outside the Car and Give Active Transportation a GO!

Getting stuck in traffic is all too familiar for those who use a motor vehicle for travel. With that in mind, the October in motion™ Community Challenge may be just the right time to try something new …

Using a motor vehicle should be an efficient means of getting to destinations such as school, work or shopping however, it can at times, be a frustrating and expensive as well as a pollution-contributing method of travel with questionable efficiency.  Consider this - the cost of owning and operating a mid-sized motor vehicle is estimated to be $10,000 per year!  One way to reduce the cost is to drive less. You may question, how is that possible? In response, let’s switch gears and “think outside the car” …

Most of us struggle to live an active lifestyle. We know that being active is good for our health but it can be difficult to fit physical activity into daily life.  Use the in motion™ Community Challenge to try active transportation (AT) for some of your daily or weekly trips.

AT means using your own power, like walking, cycling or other active travel modes such as roller blading, skate boarding and wheel chairing, to get to places. Using the bus also counts because every transit trip begins and ends with either a walk or a bike ride. Depending on the distance you travel, using AT can help you reach your daily physical activity goal of 30 minutes per day for adults / 60 minutes a day for children AND save money.

Using a motor vehicle for daily travel is for the most part considered a necessity, so much so that we rarely think about using human power to get to destinations. Think about how many places can be easily walked or biked when the distance is less than 10 km. For distances greater than 10 km, public transit is an excellent option.

Try walking or biking to get to and / or from destinations once a week or once a month.  When you figure out what route works best for you, how long it takes and what type of footwear and clothing to use, you can progress to using AT more often. You will likely find many opportunities where AT is not only possible but is the preferred way to travel, even after the in motion™ Community Challenge is over!

Reduce frustration with traffic and help improve the environment. Do something for your health and your pocket book!
